Bridging continents joyfully

Brand

Air Canada is Canada’s largest airline, the country’s flag carrier and a founding member of Star Alliance, the world’s most comprehensive air transportation network. The airline provides scheduled service directly to more than 180 airports in Canada, the United States and internationally on six continents. India has always been an important destination for Air Canada on its international schedules. When it embarked on its strategic expansion to India, we were tasked with promoting its non-stop flights to two prominent destinations New Delhi the capital city and Mumbai, the financial capital.

Strategy

Initial research revealed some interesting data on the target profile. The travel industry attracts three kinds of people who take flights. The leisure segment, the business segment and the VFR segment – people who Visit Friends and Relatives. While Air Canada’s mainstream Ad agency focused on the business and leisure categories, our focus as the Multicultural agency was to target the VFR traveler heading back to India to catch up with family and friends.

A big challenge for anyone traveling from Canada to India is the sheer amount of time it takes to get there. Hence the ‘non-stop’ schedule was a welcome differentiation – and that became the central theme of our campaign. “Bridging continents joyfully” became our central theme and we aimed to replace the frustration of the long-haul flight with the job of traveling non-stop. To reinforce the convenient flight message, we used iconic language and imagery to rekindle memories of flying the non-stop route, in the integrated campaign. The objective was to create a sense of nostalgia among Indo-Canadians with happy memories of their home city.

Outcome

The campaign was met with resounding success, resulting in increased booking for the non-stop flights. Today, in total, Air Canada operates 25 weekly flights to India, the most comprehensive offering of any carrier between Canada and India. Besides Toronto, there is increased Air Canada connectivity to India with new flights from Calgary, Vancouver and Montreal too.

“India is an important market for Air Canada, reflecting longstanding and growing family and trade ties between our two countries. We are thrilled to expand our network to Mumbai and Delhi by building additional scale at our hubs. With new non-stop flights from Toronto to Mumbai, the addition of new flights to Delhi, together with the unparalleled connectivity from our robust North American network, we are solidifying Air Canada as the leading airline offering the most travel options between Canada and India.” Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President – Revenue and Network Planning, Air Canada.
