Washington State University (WSU) (or colloquially and informally known as Wazzu) is a public land-grant research university in Washington. Founded in 1890, it is the second largest institution for higher education in Washington state behind the University of Washington. The university operates campuses across Washington at WSU Pullman, WSU Spokane, WSU Tri-Cities, and also WSU Vancouver. WSU takes pride in its status as a top-tier public research university where scholars strive to make the world a better place.

WSU engaged us to promote its acclaimed Online MBA program at the Carson School of Business. The program prepares working professionals and full-time students for leadership positions and decision-making roles in a wide variety of organizational settings. WSU needed a widespread marketing campaign to reach candidates across the globe and grow enrollment numbers. Faced with a highly competitive market, awareness, visibility, and differentiation were vital goals.

Strategy

Initial audit and research revealed that prospective MBA students have many options to choose from across the USA. Almost all of the top-tier universities were competing on pretty much similar program offerings.

We identified that WSU has traditionally never played a passive role but has always been in the forefront to change the tide of pressing issues in society. The WSU legacy spans industry-leading research in health, food, energy, sustainability, social opportunity, and global security. For well over a hundred years, WSU has earned an outstanding reputation for academic excellence, world-changing research, and a diverse, welcoming community of students, faculty and alumni.

It was the right time and a collective responsibility to establish WSU as a thought leader leading change. Thought leadership is a really effective way to build a brand, if we do it the right way. WSU’s rich legacy and core values sparked the campaign theme – “A different kind of learning and a new way of thinking”. We put together a tight marketing strategy to bolster WSU’s awareness, applicants, and enrollment. Using a combination of multichannel campaigns, print advertisements, website landing pages and a targeted student influencer campaign we attracted new prospective recruits to WSU’s portal, leading to steady applicant growth and record numbers of new students and overall enrollment.

Outcome

The targeted campaign effectively engaged WSU’s primary and secondary markets while strategically exploring high-potential out-of-state markets. Interest in the program was immediate and outstanding, exceeding the University’s expectations for enrollments.

The university elevated its standing and scale up operations expanding its reach from Washington State to the world. Marketing campaigns that tell authentic stories and provide depth with a strong message instantly become relatable.

Our comprehensive approach included: complete website redesign, paid campaigns, landing pages, search engine optimization and lead tracking from click to matriculation in Salesforce.

The campaign was highly successful, leading to a 43% increase in inquiries about the MBA program, 690 applications and 345 lead in applications rate.
